Monday football practice: Cover boy Harper and the punter is what?

Both Kevin Hudson and I were at today’s football practice to talk with players about this week’s matchup. Kevin will have his midweek update in Wednesday’s issue of the Emerald, and he was speaking with a wide receiver to be named later for this week’s Athlete of the Week.

I spoke with this week’s GameDay cover boy, Chris Harper, about his unique experience this fall as a quarterback/wide receiver. Look for that to run Friday, and I think it’s going to be something you’ll want to read.

Easily the best interview of the day was someone I grabbed at the last moment. Punter Josh Syria, who will be this week’s “Getting to Know” in GameDay, was walking back to the locker room when I caught up with him. We talked football for about five minutes, and then wound up chatting about a new favorite sport for both of us, golf, for another 30. Turns out, Syria is a big hitter off the tee (details will be in the article, trust me, he hits it Tiger lengths) who loves to talk about the sport that he recently became a fan of. He has a grandmother who still plays in Seattle and a cousin on the WSU golf team, as well, so it’s in the blood, apparently.

However, it didn’t mean that he knew former PGA tour player and golfers with disabilities champion Casey Martin is the Duck men’s golf coach. I told him he should stop by for a lesson or at least to show Martin how far he can send it. He sounded game to the idea.
