Ducks sweep Arizona State

It may have been a sweep, but the No. 7 Oregon Ducks didn’t make it look pretty. Down by as many as seven points late in the second set, the Ducks rallied to win 25-23 and go up two sets to none, thanks to the stellar play from senior Kristen Forristall. Then in the third, Oregon rolled 25-18 for the match over the Arizona State Sun Devils.

“Kristen stepped up,” head coach Jim Moore said. “What she did tonight was the definition of stepping up.”

Without captain Sonja Newcombe who didn’t play because of a knee injury, Forristall and the Ducks battled confusion and miscommunication. Someone needed to rally the team after a rash of errors in the second set almost cost them the game. Forristall answered the call and more, scoring five of Oregon’s last seven points in the match, including four in a row to tie the score at 21.

Tomorrow night, the Ducks take on Arizona. The Wildcats have been on the verge of cracking the top 25 for weeks, and with a loss at No. 24 Oregon State tonight in straight sets, they will look to get back on the right track.

Of not, Moore said they will re-evaluate Newcombe’s injury tomorrow before the match. She participated sparingly in warmups tonight, but the her right knee was encased in a cumbersome brace…Moore said the lack of emotion and confusion was due Newcombe not being on the floor…
