MMA bloodbath

Last night I had the opportunity to shoot Caged Combat 3 at Spirit Mountain Casino near Salem. Having never shot a Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) event, I had no idea what to expect. Watching a couple videos on the internet briefed me on the potential for intense and even brutal fights. But nothing could have prepared me for what I witnessed in the headlining fight between Charles “Kid Khaos” Bennett and Jason Gybels of Bend. If blood makes you queasy I’d recommend not scrolling any further.

Fans came from all over the state to watch the main event between Jason Gybels(left) and Kid Khaos. (Alex McDougall/Oregon Daily Emerald)

A powerful righthand punch landed by Kid Khaos opened up a wound near Gybels' right eye that covered both fighters in blood. (Alex McDougall/Oregon Daily Emerald)

DJ Food Stamp

I had the pleasure of photographing Andre Sirois, aka DJ Food Stamp, as he scratched records at his home on Saturday evening. A warm and genial guy, Sirois’ friendliness was only outmatched by his skills on the turntable, and of course, his love of old-school hip-hop. Be sure to read the profile on DJ Food Stamp due out in Monday’s print edition of the Oregon Daily Emerald.

Police on patrol

While fictionalized television shows such as Law & Order and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation may have led its audiences to gloss over the every day exploits that come with life on the police force, such as traffic stops, it’s all part of the job. I came across two members of the Eugene Police Department out patrolling the West campus area, late Friday night.

Bike friendly campus

University of Oregon just received a silver ranking for being a bike friendly campus. Today I visited the UO Bike Program to see what makes our campus so great for bikers. Located next to the softball field on 18th and University, the Bike Program offers a place for students to volunteer and learn how to fix bikes. They also rent bikes to students who need them for as little as a day, or up to a full year. Mechanic Taylor Miezlish is seen in the pictures below fixing a leaking tube.

Playhouse creatures

This evening I attended a rehearsal of Playhouse Creatures, a play put on by the UO theater department at the Hope Center. The play is set in the 1600s in Great Britain after Charles II decreed that women should play the rolls of women in theater instead of young boys. It opens April 15th and runs through the 30th.

Outtakes from neighborhood shoot for Emerald’s Moving Guide

Photo Editor Aaron Marineau and I woke up far earlier than normal yesterday morning to go out and shoot campus neighborhoods for a story in the Emerald’s Moving Guide, which comes out today. We ended up having a ball photographing all the unique characteristics of each neighborhood. Below are some of our favorites that didn’t make it into the paper, as well as a few shots of us “working.”

Cooperative living

UO features three cooperative living houses on campus: The Campbell Club, The Janet Smith, and The Lorax Manner. I visited two of them today, the Lorax and Campbell. The latter is the oldest on campus, founded in 1935. The houses are unique and feature constantly evolving artwork throughout the rooms and hallways.
