Woodside-Gomez barraged by e-mails, texts in days before hearing

ASUO Sen. Brianna Woodside-Gomez said that following her decision to disallow public testimony at Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group’s budget hearing, she received comments via her e-mail and phone inboxes.

The text messages said such things as “Don’t listen to the Daily Emerald, stay strong, do this for the students,” Woodside-Gomez said.

When Athletics and Contracts Finance Committee members agreed to receive emails as public testimony, they supposed OSPIRG members would submit more accumulated emails, but Woodside-Gomez added that she had received 35 emails in the past two days, a large number of which came to her personal email account.

At the end of OSPIRG’s budget hearing, following public comment from senators and other members of ASUO politics and the four OSPIRG presenters, Sen. Ian Fielding cited quotes from Emerald articles that showed lobbying OSPIRG had done that other contracted groups were not doing.

“Lobbying for funding from ASUO: No other contract does this,” Fielding said at the meeting.

Woodside-Gomez ended the meeting with a motion to adjourn based on the texts and e-mails she had received to her school e-mail account.

UPDATE: The adjourning motion was approved 4-1-0.

Sen. Bocchicchio resigns

One more senator was added to the resignation tally today when Chris Bocchicchio announced his resignation from the ASUO Senate.

Bocchicchio was unanimously confirmed to Senate seat 13 at the Dec. 2, 2009, meeting and maintained his seat this year, making him among the longest-sitting members on the Senate as of his resignation.

The Emerald did not receive a copy of Bocchicchio’s official resignation letter, but Sens. Ian Fielding and Brianna Woodside-Gomez said he cited school as his primary reason for resignation.

Confirmed: He held Senate seat 13 before his resignation. The seat is listed as open on the ASUO Website.

Bus funding increases, pending student ridership study

The Athletics and Contracts Finance Committee voted to approve Lane Transit District’s full budget increase, bucking the Senate’s recommendation to give the group zero percent growth for the 2011-12 fiscal year.

On Tuesday night, the ACFC unanimously approved the Executive recommendation of 12.92 percent increase, setting LTD’s contract budget at $1,321,524.

All five voting members were at the LTD hearing and approved the $151,247 increase for next year with the stipulation that students who wish to ride the bus next year obtain a free sticker for the purpose of testing University student ridership for coming years.

This sticker will also try to assuage bus driver concerns that non-students or alumni are using ID cards illegally.

Informal notice: At approximately 5:25 p.m., Executive Appointee Clark Kissiah moved to hold a five-minute recess. It was seconded by committee Vice Chair Ian Fielding and  the committee returned and reconvened officially at 5:34 p.m.

Kissiah was the first on the speaker’s list when they came back to order and immediately asked a question about how student populations at the University and Lane Community College affected their LTD payment.

LTD spokesperson Andy Vobora said LTD determined its group rates based on a model used in Santa Barbara, Calif.

“We took that and modeled ours after it. The pricing behind it, the idea behind it; is it’s a revenue-neutral program,” Vobora said.

Essentially, a group paying for 100 riders individually could make a group plan for the same cost and allow for more than 100 riders on the plan. Such a plan implies a desire to increase ridership.

“We wanted to fill the seats,” Vobora said.

Ideas were tossed around back and forth concerning lowering the budget by requiring students to pay for their rider sticker, but the eventual vote was taken to continue free LTD service for all incidental fee-paying students.

Watch out for: In discussion of the idea of non-riders subsidizing bus fare for riders, rather than paying for the fare entirely, the committee let slip that it was discussing similar measures to be taken for the University athletic department regarding season tickets.

The athletic director has yet to schedule a budget hearing with the ACFC. Questions about obtaining student tickets for football and men’s basketball next year should be answered at that meeting.

Notable non-committee members in attendance: Sens. Kaitlyn Lange (5 – EMU), Emma Newman (6 – EMU), Max Barkley (11 – academic undecided), Zachary Stark-MacMillan (14 – academic sciences), OSPIRG Board Chair Charles Denson, former ASUO Finance Coordinator Grace Bounds, and former ASUO Political Director Robert D’Andrea.

ACFC committee members: Sen. Brianna Woodside-Gomez, Sen. Ian Fielding, Exec appointee Clark Kissiah, at-large member Brian Williams, at-large member Andrew Quinlan.

Fake punt and great catch, but no points for UO in third

Newton was again able to spot the weakness in Oregon’s pass coverage, as he found Philip Lutzenkirchen for a 39-yard strike down the sideline. It was almost identical to his touchdown pass to Blake late in the second quarter, with Rowe stuck in man-coverage yet again. The Ducks were able to force an Auburn field goal after the Tigers milked three and 1/2 minutes off the clock.

Oregon’s following drive was stopped short around midfield and Rice’s punt bounced through the back of the end zone, giving Auburn the ball back at the 20. After Newton over threw Darvin Adams, who’d separated himself 15 yards behind the Oregon secondary, the Tigers were forced to punt. With Harris back deep for the first time, Auburn punter Ryan Shoemaker kicked the ball out of bounds at the Oregon 27 yard line.

It was a big stop for the defense, and it was clear Thomas and the Oregon offense needed to get something going offensively.

It looked like Oregon was forced into another punting situation, then Rice hit Marvin Johnson out of the backfield on a fake punt to pick up the first down. Lavasier Tuinei made a highlight reel catch good for 43 yards on the ensuing play to put Oregon on the Auburn three yard line. Four straight rushing plays halted, and the Ducks turned the ball over on downs.

It was a huge missed opportunity for the Ducks, desperately in need of scoring points as they trailed 19-11 at the end of the third quarter.

Offenses pick up in second quarter, Auburn takes 16-11 lead

The Ducks began the second quarter with a third-and-two at the goal line, but Thomas was sacked for a loss of six yards and Oregon had to settle for a 26-yard field goal. With that, the scoreless tie was finally broken and Oregon led 3-0.

Auburn then took the ball at the 18 and began to move steadily up the field. Cliff Harris nearly came up with another interception, but it was ruled an incomplete pass after he fell out of bounds. Newton then hit Kodi Burns for a 35-yard touchdown pass to give Auburn a 7-3 lead.

The Ducks took the ball at their own 7-yard line after a botched hand off play between Huff and Barner. Thomas made up for it with an 81-yard pass to Jeff Maehl, bringing Oregon to the Auburn 12-yard line. James finished it off with a six-yard touchdown grab, and the Ducks faked the extra point with a handoff to Rob Beard. The conversion was successful and Oregon took an 11-7 lead.

Auburn’s offense started at the 31-yard line, and embarked on another steady drive before being stopped on third and goal. The Tigers went for it, but Newton under threw his receiver and the Ducks came through with the huge stop.

Of course, that gave Oregon the ball at the one-yard line, which immediately spelled trouble. After a penalty on first down, LaMichael James took the ball and was stopped in the end zone for a safety.

With the Oregon lead cut to two, Auburn took the ball once again. With Newton at the helm, the Tigers picked apart the Oregon defense and Newton hit Emory Blake for a touchdown. All of a sudden, Auburn led 16-11.

Oregon attempted a response before halftime, but was forced to punt with 30 seconds left.

Though one may have assumed that Auburn would have simply run the clock down, it instead began to drive again before finally running the clock out on a missed Hail Mary pass.

At the half, it was Auburn 16, Oregon 11.

Thomas, Newton combine for three INTs in scoreless first

GLENDALE — No. 2 Oregon won the coin toss and elected to receive, with Josh Huff returning the opening kickoff to the 16-yard line as the Ducks set up their first offensive possession. Light bulbs flashed all around the stadium, as the 2011 BSC National Championship game got under way.

The two teams exchanged punts on their opening possessions, before a Darron Thomas pass bounced off Kenjon Barner’s hands on third-and-long, which landed in the grasp of senior cornerback Demond Washington. Auburn took over on Oregon’s 47-yard line, but on the opening play sophomore cornerback Cliff Harris intercepted Newton’s pass to give the Ducks the ball around midfield.

Oregon picked up a few good first downs from there, but with little time to throw, Thomas saw another pass land in a defenders hands, this time via safety Zac Etheridge in the Tiger red zone. Oregon’s Zac Clark had a big third down sack on Newton, and Auburn was forced to punt again.

The Ducks continued to march the ball on the ensuing drive, and a 12-men on the field penalty put the ball at the Auburn 11. Thomas connected with D.J. Davis a few plays later to put the ball on the Tiger three-yard line as the first quarter expired.

Here we are, finally

The time has finally come.

University of Phoenix Stadium before the BCS National Championship game on Jan. 10, 2010. (Ivar Vong/Oregon Daily Emerald)

The Oregon Daily Emerald sports desk arrived at the University of Phoenix Stadium around 1:45 p.m. local time, and after a quick pass through security we found our way up to the press box.

For me personally, this is my first visit to a pro football venue, and I must say I’m pretty impressed. We’ve checked out the field, pristine as expected. For the second year in a row we’ve been on the field with just a handful of other people, and basically had the place to ourselves.

I have the grass stains on the soles of my shoes to prove it.

Next, the feast.

Grilled chicken, beef brisket, corn, baked beans, salad, apple pie… the list continues.

A fed sports desk is a happy sports desk.

And, we even got to check out the ESPN 3D station set up in the press box. Another first for me, but well worth taking a look.

Well, we’ve got less than two hours remaining before kickoff, and as I’m sure all of you are, we’re more than ready to get things started. We’ll be providing quarterly blog posts to accompany our twitter feed, so be sure to follow us along as the 2011 Tostitos BCS National Championship game unfolds.
