A hacker claiming to be from Iran but posting from a Polish domain posted an anti-Obama message on the Oregon University System’s Web page Wednesday morning. The message read as follows:

Hey Stupid Fly Catcher Obama! Stop talking about Iran and telling to your dogs (UK, France, Germany) to talk about Iran and Iran Election. Keep working on your fucked country and try to solve economic crysis in your hungry country! Iran’s election doesn’t have problem and Moosavi with his tiny brain will be in jail in near future, so don’t pay your time and money for him and for his fans. 70-80% of Iranian people hate Moosavi nowadays… We never cheated in elections and even Moosavi knows that. So stop this stupid things! OK????

OUS spokesperson Di Saunders told the Chronicle of Higher Education she didn’t know why OUS’ page was targeted.

Though this news is old now, what with President Dave Frohnmayer’s having elected to retain Russell Athletic’s licensing agreement, the University’s General Counsel has granted my request for the company’s licensing agreement with the University.

The first part of the document — a stock University Licensing agreement with Russell’s name handwritten at the top in blue ink — is available here. Under its terms (based on my non-authoritative interpretation), the University can only end the agreement if it does not affect the royalties it will earn, or if Russell is unable to make products and pay for them, or if any other part of the contract is broken.

The second part of the document contains a cost schedule, signatures, and a list of the products Russell produces.

The University ran programs for its architecture and journalism schools out of the Willamette Building in downtown Portland until 2008, when it moved them to the iconic White Stag Building. The building also housed an outpost of the University of Oregon Duck Store.

PCC paid the Oregon University System $5 million for the 127-year old building. The community college has already begun the building’s first rennovation since 1980, which will cost a further $6.7 million.

As you may have read in the Emerald today, President Frohnmayer has said he will not cancel the contract with Russell because of the WRC’s claims of labor violations. Here is the letter he sent to one of the members of Step Up, Oregon! In it, he explains that he does not believe their argument is valid because the purported illegality to which they refer is, in his view, not applicable to the OUS’ policy.

For your reference, here is the letter Step Up, Oregon! sent to Frohmayer.

UPDATE: This is a copy of the OUS policy Frohnmayer is citing.

Other developments:

Sixty-five members of Congress have expressed concern to Russell in a letter. The list includes Eugene’s Peter DeFazio and fellow Oregon Congressman David Wu. “We urge you,” the letter reads, “to take all necessary action to ensure that any harm done to your employees in Honduras is fully remedied in a manner satisfactory to workers and their elected representatives, and that their rights to association are respected going forward.” However, the wording of the letter does not suggest that Russell has actually committed any wrongdoing. It merely states that if Russell has committed wrongdoing, it should redress it.

Meanwhile Russell has its own letter, from the President of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya Rosales, which is available here in the original Spanish and in a translation from Russell here.

Here’s a digest of resources related to the allegations surrounding Russell Athletic

WITH RUSSELL

The company itself has sent out three press releases on the subject. The first points to decisions at schools including Florida and Princeton to keep contracts with Russell. Another outlines efforts Russell is taking to clear its name with consumers. The last says some are being convinced.

Russell’s own version of events is also available online. “We are the single largest employer in Honduras,” the company claims.

The company has set up a Web site called “Russell Social Responsibility” which defends its record, citing a study by the Fair Labor Association, which, it must be noted, draws funding from Russell.

There are articles in USC’s Daily Trojan, Princeton’s Daily Princetonian, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Gainesville Sun that detail colleges’ decision to keep the contract.

AGAINST RUSSELL

The United Students Against Sweatshops runs a blog opposing Russell complete with cheesy illustrations featuring scissors and expressive Russell logs and updates on schools that cancel contracts.

USAS‘ Web site.

The Worker Rights Consortium’s Web site, which has coverage of efforts against Russell.

The original WRC report that blew the entire thing open is available here. It says Russell has a “prior record of” doing things against unions, then claiming they’re economically motivated. On this page, WRC has a list of resources on Russell’s closure of the Jerzees de Honduras factory and the related closure of the Jerzees Choloma factory.

The New York Times and Chronicle of Higher Education wrote articles about the closure in February, after the University of Michigan cancelled its license. It must be noted that Nike ended its relationship with Michigan after Michigan joined the WRC.
