Sept. 28 City Council Meeting

The Monday meeting focused on approving the Willakenzie Landbank site to be transformed into an affordable housing cooperation for low-income families. The new housing complex will help combat homelessness in the city limits as well as provide homes for special-needs citizens.

Several community members spoke on behalf of different issues. A service worker from West Eugene commented on how the addition of furlough days to his work schedule has added a great deal of stress and hostility in his life. Council members agreed that it was unfortunate, but the only feasible response to the financial crisis at the time. Council member Pryor mentioned that he had to cut his own salary to keep others employed.

Another man spoke, urging that the Council works harder to revitalize downtown Eugene. Mayor Piercy noted that they are constantly working on improving it’s presence, and mentioned the revitalization program “Eugene Counts”.
