Volleyball, UO vs. PSU: Set 1

We’re all set to go here at Mac Court. Ducks are receiving to start the first set..

It started off kind of rough for UO. A few miss hits and a few blocks by PSU put the Vikings up 3-2, but then the Ducks reeled off a 9-2 run to take a commanding 11-5 lead halfway through the set. A few bright spots in that time, Heather Meyers is hitting the ball even harder if that’s possible and freshman Katherine Fischer is a solid replacement for Gorana Maricic. She hits the ball hard, serves very well and dives all over the place for balls. I’m very impressed with her…

The Ducks ended up winning the set 25-18. The Vikings made a charge to 12-10, but three kills by senior Sonja Newcombe established the lead again into the six points range, and the Ducks cruised to the set win.

Interesting note, freshman Kellie Kawasaki started for the Ducks instead of Amanda Westrick. Head coach Jim Moore said at the beginning of fall camp that Westrick was the starter, but it looks like Kawasaki is coming on strong lately. She was impressive in the first set, digging a few balls that were pretty tough.
