The Oregonian reported today that state legislators will consider a bill that requires state universities to interview minority candidates for coaching positions in athletics, including football. The bill mirrors a similar regulation adopted by the NFL in 2003. Since that rule was adopted, Tony Dungy and Mike Tomlin, both black, have won the Super Bowl as head coaches. If passed, the bill would not affect the University’s hiring of its white offensive coordinator Chip Kelly as head football coach because of a clause in his contract promising him promotion. 2008 ASUO presidential candidate and Oregon Students of Color Coalition member Kari Herinckx testified at the hearing on the bill.
