The fourth set had an altogether different feel than the first three sets. Knowing that they were potentially down to their last set to try and stave off another loss, Oregon battled for each and every point. After 22 points combined, Oregon was up two 12-10, led by some timely hitting from Gorana Maricic. There were eight ties in that stretch, and Oregon twice came back from a deficit.
With the score 14-11 UO, Washington went on a 4-1 run to again tie the game at 15, thanks to two in the net penalties against the Ducks. This was followed by a mini 3-0 run to take the wind out of the crowd- and the Ducks. Four hitting errors were the cause, two by Kristen Forristall, and one each by Newcombe and Heather Meyers.
Oregon again stopped the bleeding, fighting back to tie the game at 18 behind kills from Forristall, Newcombe, and Maricic. But that tie would be the last time Oregon would be close to getting the set victory. Three straight hitting errors by Oregon players allowed the Huskies to open up a 23-20 lead, and two kills by Washington ended Oregon’s upset bid, and sent the Ducks to their 16th straight loss to the purple and gold from Seattle.
