Kallaway: Kassa will oversee Soto replacement

ASUO President Emma Kallaway said Wednesday Vice President Getachew Kassa will oversee any appointments requiring Senate confirmation before the ASUO Constitution Court decides the grievance pending against her, including the seat formerly held by Sen. Lidiana Soto.

Soto, who resigned yesterday citing time conflicts with classes and rugby during her senior year, ran for vice president just four months ago.

“I think it’s really unfortunate that she’s leaving,” Kallaway said. She said Soto “represented not only communities she felt she was a part of but she was a great academic senator and it will be sad to see her go.”

Kallaway must fill the vacancy within 30 days. Given that there are applicants for several other vacant positions requiring confirmation, it seems fair to assume a selection could be made before the court makes a decision in Haley v. Kallaway, which seeks Kallaway’s removal from office.

Kallaway must also now hire a new elections coordinator after Braden Wolf resigned Wednesday. The elections coordinator is a member of the executive staff and does not require Senate confirmation, so Kallaway said she will participate in the hiring process.

“We don’t see (executive staff and Senate openings) as being correlated and we have always hired our staff internally,” Kallaway said. “(Chief of staff) Ella (Barrett) and Getachew and I have always hired our own staff.”
