ASUO Sen. Ergas resigns

ASUO Sen. Christina Ergas resigned Thursday after less than two months in her position, citing the larger-than-expected time commitment the position would require.

Ergas, a PhD. candidate in sociology, is also a shop steward in the Graduate Teaching Fellow Federation. She represented graduate and law students on the Senate, but attended only one meeting before her resignation. Her resignation leaves the 20-seat Senate with two empty positions, pending the confirmation of former Sen. Carina Miller to a now-vacant seat representing the EMU Board.

Graduate students have traditionally been underrepresented in the ASUO. ASUO President Emma Kallaway has still made no hire for the graduate and law advocate position on her staff. Ergas ran unopposed for the seat she was elected to, and received only 75 votes.

The seat will remain vacant until Kallaway selects a successor, who must then be confirmed by the Senate.

The text of Ergas’ resignation, sent to Kallaway and Summer Senate Chairman Nick Gower, is below:

To Whom it May Concern:

Unfortunately, I must resign from my senate position for the 2009/2010 academic year.  I was recently informed that my job will require double the time commitment than I had originally anticipated.  In light of this news, I will not be able to fulfill my senatorial duties.

Best,

Christina Ergas
