Commencement moved back to after finals
The Oregonian and Register-Guard are reporting that the University has changed its plans for the 2010 commencement ceremony and will now hold it after finals as is customary.
The plan had originally been to hold the ceremony before graduates took their finals in order to accommodate the NCAA National Track and Field Championships, scheduled in the ceremony’s usual slot. The move brooked criticism on a national level from educators who accused then-President Dave Frohnmayer of mistaken priorities and subsequent angry reactions from Frohnmayer himself in print. (which are apparently no longer hosted by the Register-Guard’s Web site in what appears a misguided attempt at monetizing online content)
The decision was announced in an e-mail sent by Provost Jim Bean. On the reasons for the change, the Oregonian’s Suzanne Pardington writes:
Bean wrote that university officials reconsidered the commencement date because “the NCAA is seriously considering eliminating regional qualifying events for the NCAA finals,” which would move the championships forward a week.
Officials also are expecting smaller crowds at the track event than they first estimated, freeing up hotel space, Bean wrote.
Update: added link to Frohnmayer’s piece.

Misguided indeed. Please excuse my cynicism. I’ll try to sort out the timestamp issue. I believe the headline was “A Higher Standard at the UO,” although I can’t be sure. I searched for a quote from the original in the archives and that was the only result that came up, although the abstract does not look entirely promising.
Yeah, that was the headline. It was Frohnmayer’s response to the previous week’s piece by Nathan Tublitz (in which Tublitz referenced the moving of graduation as evidence of the UO’s misplaced priorities.)

Any idea what the headline was of the story that’s dropped off the R-G site? If so, I can hopefully resurrect it.
Hate to see our youths so cynical!
