Rep. Barnhart’s End-of-Session Report

Representative Phil Barnhart recently released a legislative report for the last session outlining key environmental and health legislation. A large area of focus in his report was the issue of grass seed burning in the Willamette valley and the steps he took in order to cease this major allergen. Barnhart co-sponsored Senate Bill 528 banning field burning earlier in the year, which led to a state law.

“By 2010 Lane and Linn counties’ grass seed growers along with those in seven other counties will have to use existing alternatives to clear fields. We will all breathe a little more easily,”

said Barnhart. This is great news for the hundred of sinus-impaired community members living in one of the top grass-seed capitols of the nation.

Barnhart continues that in the last session, the legislature passed the following additional bills: Senate Bill 101 requiring emissions from energy producers to be no greater than a natural gas plant, Senate Bill 596 restricting DecaBDE ( a hazardous chemical most commonly used in fire retardants) in products, and House Bill 2186 authorizing the Environmental Quality Commission to create a low carbon fuel standard, reducing greenhouse gas pollution 10% by 2020.

Barnhart finishes with a short synopsis of House Bill 2626, which aims to “create a loan program for homeowners and businesses encouraging investments in energy efficiency and sustainable technology”, and assures the community that the state’s legislature is working hard towards a green future.
