OUS Respond to Letter on Campus Gun Regulations

On June 30, the Oregon University System replied to the letter sent by 34 Oregon legislators asking OUS to consider revising their current on-campus gun handling laws. The letter urged the OUS to dismiss their ban on Concealed Handgun License holders carrying guns on Oregon university and college campuses, as discussed in this article .

In their response, the OUS stands by their prior beliefs, stating that

“Fundamentally, though, OUS and the State Board of Higher Education believe that out campuses are safer without firearms.”

They also add that have been advised by the Oregon Department of Justice to wait until a Medford court case pending in the Court of Appeals surrounding this issue is finalized to make a solid statement about their regulations.

State Representative and founder of the original letter pro-gun handling on campus, Kim Thatcher, was not impressed by the rebuttal. calling it a “non-response”. She continues,

“I find it ironic that the OUS wants to leave the final decision up to the Oregon Legislature since it is that body which already passed a state law stating very clearly that CHL holders are allowed to carry on University campuses.”
