Proposed Legislature Granting Oregon In-State Tuition to all Veterans

The senate has passed House Bill 2571 (with a 28-0 vote), granting honorable discharged veterans the ability to attend all public Oregon universities and colleges with in-state tuition.

The post-9/11 G.I. Bill currently gives veterans a 15-year window to attend any national public higher-education facilities, covering tuition costs. According to this chart, on the G.I. Bill’s official website, the amount granted by the bill is not enough to fund out-of-state tuition costs in Oregon.

While the post-9/11 G.I. Bill covers a substantial amount, Oregon aims to cover complete costs, non-dependent on the veteran’s state residency. Senator Martha Schrader , who assisted in the funding HB 2571, states “we are all in effect, saying ‘Oregon is a state that welcomes all veterans who have sacrificed for their country’.” Senate Majority Leader Richard Devlin also believes that the passing of this bill could honor veteran service while also adding to the diversity of Oregon campuses.

House Bill 2571 is currently going to the governor’s desk for a finalizing signature.
