Lacrosse’s Senior Day memorable for the freshmen
On Senior Day at Papé Field, it was truly the freshmen’s day.
Freshmen sister starters Jana and Jess Drummond combined to score six goals Saturday in Oregon’s 15-10 win over Virginia Tech. The win gives Oregon its 10th win of the season, and drops the Hokies to 7-8.
“We played for our seniors today,” Jess Drummond said. “It’s really exciting to know that I had an impact on the team today.”
Five of those goals came in the second half, when Oregon was able to finally create a gap between itself and the Hokies. The Ducks scored the last four goals to turn a game that was 11-10 with 4:30 remaining in the game into a much more comfortable affair.
Ilsa van den Berg, one of six seniors honored, missed all three free position shots she shot to begin the game, and the Ducks as a whole were similarly frustrated early. The Hokies took a 4-1 lead by the 14:23 mark of the first half before the Ducks scored six of the next seven goals to regain momentum. Two of those goals were by van den Berg, who converted a free position goal to bring the game to 4-3 with 8:40 left, then barged through four defenders to the goal to bring Oregon to tie the game at five goals apiece three minutes later.
“Nothing’s sweeter than beating a team on their Senior Day so we definitely knew Virginia Tech would be out for blood,” van den Berg said. “I didn’t get worried. We’ve come back in games from being down and being poised and finished.”
Goalkeeper Anna Poponyak, a fifth-year senior, extended her career saves mark by surpassing 500 saves on a save with 4:35 left in the game. Five seconds later, however, Virginia Tech scored.
Oregon’s victory came nearly a year to the day after last year’s Senior Day win on April 13 over Saint Mary’s that also gave the Ducks their 10th win of the season.
“You can’t even explain how awesome it is,” Drummond said.
