Pregame at the Holiday Bowl
SAN DIEGO — Well here we are, a day later than expected but inside the friendly confines of Qualcomm’s press box anyway.
Current temperature: Somewhere in the mid-60’s.
Press box fare: Nothing for free — the first pay for food box I’ve been in this season. A definite thumbs-down from this college reporter.
UPDATE 4:02 p.m.: Everything was free but the cookies, which ran a stiff $1.50. Some other media members splurged, but then again they have per diem. Menu was beef stroganoff with a wheat roll and a ‘vegetable medley,’ and a side salad. Average — but free.
But really, you can’t beat this weather. In an open press box like this, where I’m in the front row, you pray for sun and blue skies. We have that today. (Let’s not forget what it’s like in an open press box when it rains — See, Berkeley, Calif., pictures in the blog for the soaked evidence.)
Oregon is taking a walkthrough right now while Oklahoma State stands at a circle in prayer. Maybe 100 fans are here.
No sign of fireworks yet — that should come at kickoff, both literally and figuratively. Check back for intermittent posts pregame before the whole blog shebang goes off at gametime, 5 p.m. Pacific. In case you didn’t know, the game is on ESPN tonight.
