Holiday Bowl 2nd Quarter: OSU 17, UO 7
5:59: Oregon went for a fourth-and-3 situation and didn’t make it on the Masoli keeper up the middle. The Ducks spread out four receivers and left Masoli alone in his backfield to fend for himself, but even the Ducks’ vaunted offensive line couldn’t push through. OK State took over at their own 43-yard line.
QUICK 1st Quarter stats: Dez Bryant, OSU’s star WR, had 7 catches for 89 yards and a TD in the first quarter. Jeremiah Johnson had 78 yards on 2 carries in the first quarter. Overall, OSU ran 26 plays for 199 yards while UO ran 8 plays for 135 yards.
Here’s a big one: Possession time. OSU had the ball for 11:31, UO for 3:29. That will hurt Oregon’s defense in the long run tonight.
6:11: Here’s that possession time. OK State has held the ball since 14:44 in this quarter, nearly 4:30 minutes already on this drive. On third-and-10, Robinson was incomplete to Dez Bryant from the UO 26-yard line. Fourth down, they kick a 43-yard field goal that is… no good. Oregon takes over at its own 26.
6:25: Dez Bryant was hit by Jairus Byrd and landed awkwardly on his left lower leg at the UO 25-yard line. He walked off with the help of trainers. On the next play, fourth-and-2 at the UO 25, a pitch play to Keith Toston lost three yards on a double tackle of Nick Reed and Spencer Paysinger. Oregon takes the ball over at its own 28 with 3:38 left in the second quarter.
6:34: Fourth-and-4 at the OSU 40 yard line, and Oregon converted with a one-handed catch for 10 yards to tight end Ed DIckson. When the drive stalled, however, Morgan Flint missed his second kick of the night from 46 yards wide right.
6:40: Zac Robinson went deep down the right sideline for DeMarcus Conner, whose juggled catch landed right in the arms of the man supposed to be covering him — who was on the ground. That was Walter Thurmond. The play was reviewed with 14 seconds left and ruled an interception. When the Ducks took the ball over, Masoli missed Terence Scott high on an out-route to the sideline, then hit Scott on a short screen over the middle, who ran to the OK State 35 yard line, a gain of 22. Then, Masoli ran out of bounds and the half was over. An anti-climactic end to an equally anti-climactic second quarter. No scoring, plenty of chances, many missed opportunities.
