Saint Mary's vs. Oregon: 2nd Half

Oregon saw Saint Mary’s lead grow to 10 points with 17:25 left in the game after Carlin Hughes hit a three on a pass from Patrick Mills. Then Diamon Simpson posted up and hit a layup to push the lead to 49-37 with 17:10 to go.

The Ducks came back with five points of their own, all from Joevan Catron. He hit a three and a spinning layup to excite the small crowd, getting the Ducks within seven at 49-42 with 15:15 left. Kamyron Brown helped to further the run, getting a layup and a free throw to shorten the lead to 49-45 for the Gaels.

Catron continued his inspired play, hitting a step back jumper from the left side with 12:50 to go, getting Oregon within two. The Ducks had a chance to tie after a miss by Wayne Hunter, but Garret Sim missed a layup, and the Gaels took it the length of the floor, and finished with a Patrick Mills finger roll to give Sain Mary’s a 51-47 lead with 11:51 to go.

Tajuan Porter came out hitting after the timeout, getting a layup and a mid range jumper to get Oregon back within two at 53-51, and after a layup by Simpson with 10:20 to go, Mike Dunnigan got a dunk on a pass from Porter to keep the score at two at 55-53.

With 9:54, Saint Mary’s guard Ian O’Leary fouled Catron, and Catron hit both free throws to tie the game at 55. The Ducks continued to pressure the Gaels, and a traveling call on a half-court trap gave Oregon the chance to take the lead. However, Dunnigan lost the ball, but made up for it by blocking Omar Samhan on the other end with 9:03 to go. The Ducks still couldn’t capitalize, as they turned the ball over again, and Dunnigan fouled Simpson, and he hit one of two free throws to give the Gaels a 56-55 lead with 8:35 left. Samhan then got the second miss and layed it up to push the lead to 58-55 with just over eight minutes to go.

Samhan added another layup with 7:40 left in the game, and the Gaels, after giving up a ten point lead, pushed their lead to four at 60-56 with 7:30. Oregon forward Churchill Odia hit two free throws to get the score back to two points, but Mills again stopped the rally, this time with a swooping finger roll with 6:50 left to put the Gaels up 62-58.

The score remained 62-58 for the next two minutes, with both teams trading misses and turnovers. Yusef Smith of the Gaels finally broke that with a bouncing free throw with 4:52 left, and Wayne Hunter put in a layup with 4:15 to push the lead to 65-58. Kamyron Brown broke the nearly three minute scoring draught for the Ducks with two free throws with 4:08 to play to get the Ducks to 65-60.

Oregon had its chances, and after two missed free throws, Porter hit a long two, and with 2:25, LeKendrick Longmire hit a three pointer to get the Ducks to three points at 68-65. Mills hit two free throws with two minutes left, to put the Gaels back up by five. Porter responded by draining a three pointer from three feet beyond the arc with 1:35 left, but Simpson made a layup to push the lead to four.

Porter came through yet again, hitting a 15 footer with 1:04 left to get the Ducks to two points at 72-70. However, Mills hit one of two free throws with 43 seconds left, and Simpson got the rebound, and Oregon was forced to foul. Hughes hit two more free throws, and Saint Mary’s was again up by five.

Brown was fouled with 25.5 seconds on the clock, and hit one of two to shorten the lead to 75-71, but then the Ducks were forced to foul and extend the game. Mills went to the line and made two more to give Saint Mary’s a 77-71, and after another foul by the Ducks, Saint Mary’s beat Oregon 78-73 to extend their record to 8-1. Oregon fell to 4-6 on the year. Next up for the Ducks is Portland this Saturday, Dec. 20 in Eugene.
