No. 8 Oregon vs. No. 5 Washington: Set 2

The Ducks raced out of the gate in the second set, taking an early 6-2, led by three kills from junior captain Sonja Newcombe and a block from sophomore Heather Meyers. The Huskies stopped the run with 4-0 one of their own to tie the game at 6-6, and then tied the game again at 12.

Then Meyers asserted herself again with two straight kills to push the Oregon lead to 17-13. The Ducks then the Huskies on the ropes at 24-20 before the Huskies made one final attempt at a comeback. A block off of a hit by Newcombe, followed by an ace from setter Tamari Miyashiro closed the gap to two points.

But it was the captain and heart of the team, Newcombe, who finished the Huskies off and sent the Ducks into the break tied at one set a piece. Her tip down the left sideline fell just out of the reach of Miyashiro, and it sent the Mac Court crowd into a frenzy.
