Practice notes from Monday
Neither Kevin Hudson nor myself were able to make Tuesday’s practice, although I showed up at the end to get the photos for this week’s GameDay — a duo I know people should like.
Anyway, there was a scuffle that ended up with Jairus Byrd getting kicked out. Journalism student Michael Bishop was there for his own story but recounted what happened.
“An uneventful open practice became heated on Tuesday, after Jerome Boyd and LeGarrette Blount got into an altercation during offense vs. defense drills. The confrontation, which occurred with less than an hour left in practice, escalated and resulted in Mike Bellotti’s expulsion of Jairus Byrd from practice.
Towards the end a run by Blount, Boyd wrapped him up and threw him to the turf with more force than necessary—at least according to Blount—who immediately popped up off the turf to retaliate against Boyd. The two then got into a shoving match on the far sideline, where backup defensive players were watching the drill.
Some players tried to separate the two, and one player tried to hold Blount back. Well, that may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but who’s really going to be able to hold that man back? Right, nobody. As Blount made his way back towards Boyd, Jarius Byrd stepped in and another pushing and shoving match ensued.
By this time, Bellotti had made his way over to the skirmish. He tried to separate Blount and Byrd, but Byrd wouldn’t let up. Doing his best Max Unger impersonation, Bellotti attempted to block Byrd from going after Blount. I never thought I’d see Bellotti chop his feet like that. Byrd and Bellotti continued pushing and flailing their arms towards each other until another player finally grabbed Byrd and Bellotti motioned for Byrd to leave practice.
As the Ducks’ bowl picture is still unclear, the last thing they need is inner conflict, but maybe that fire and intensity, seen for a couple minutes on Tuesday, will carry over to Saturday’s important match up with the Wildcats.”
What a practice to miss, right?
